Ranid

"If any mortal kin could be said to be of one mind, the ranid are it. Nearly every one of them from their highest leaders to their outcasts, believe in the possibility of Absolute Enlightenment and the need to share it with the world. This belief is tied to their intense hunger and resulting philosophy that the way of the world is eat or be eaten. Enlightenment is the one true escape from this reality. To that end they devote much of their short lives to reaching a state of divine being and are willing to try almost anything to find it. Anything that could hinder that goal, such as anger, violence, lying, stealing, even rudeness, is strongly discouraged. To that end most ranid are patient and understanding, helpful and kind, ready to offer their services and ask for little in return.

Ranid live wherever they can find warmth and water. They tend to build their villages and monasteries in rain forests, river deltas, and tropical highlands. Primarily carnivores, but constrained by their beliefs, ranid try to restrict themselves to eating only insects, pests, and vermin. They can stomach some soft fruits, but lack the anatomy to properly chew and digest vegetable matter."

Kappa

Ravenous hunger and cannibalism are the hallmark of the dreaded kappa, and luckily for other mortals, makes them incapable of organizing in numbers. Squat and more toadlike than ranid, kappa have flattened heads and colors that blend into the muck and fetid waters of their swampy homes. This helps them ambush their prey, which they must as often as possible to satisfy their unending hunger. There is normally no talking to a kappa, no mercy, no parley or trade. They need to eat and meat is the only thing on their mind. Only the deftest of trickery or promising a more satisfactory meal can delay a kappa in the middle of a hunt.
