Odysseus Station
The twin anomalies Scylla and Charybdis discovered deep in the Oort cloud of humankind’s home solar system jump started our transition to an interstellar civilization. It was all due to the unique temporal effects found within the wormhole connecting the two anomalies. Depending on which opening you sent a ship in, time would move faster or slower compared to normal space. This was an unprecedented boon for scientific research and high-end manufacturing. To regulate the usage of the wormholes and protect the interests of humanity, the Odysseus space station was built at the midpoint between Scylla and Charybdis.
Shortly after its construction alien civilizations began arriving in Earth space seeking out strange energies that had been released when the wormholes first opened up. These newcomers also saw the potential value of the anomalies. To prevent an all out war over access to them, which could have resulted in their destruction, multiple races came together in alliance with the Complete Terran Coalition to expand Odysseus station for all to use. The CTC retains complete political control over the station and regulates all interactions with the paired anomalies. The station is now capable of accommodating over two dozen alien species in addition to the CTC scientific and corporate interests already staged there.
This is where you come in. All craft that visits from outside the system or returning from a trip into the wormholes must be carefully inspected and cleaned before being allowed to dock. No one wants another phytozombie outbreak happening on their shift. This is one of the most important and dangerous jobs in known space. You shouldn’t worry though. Protocols are in place, quality gear is available, and your training was top notch. Everyone has faith you will do well in your duties.
