Mask Aliens

At first glance, they appear deceptively simple: pale, blank, mask-like forms with faint impressions hinting at eyes and a mouth that never truly exist. Around their edges sprout a ring of short, insectoid legs, constantly testing the air and surface beneath them, as if searching for the next point of purchase. It is only when one sees them in motion that their true horror becomes apparent. The underside of each Mask is lined with a dense mat of fine, hairlike filaments that seek out living flesh, burrowing into the soft architecture of a humanoid face with horrifying precision.
Once attached, separation is not a matter of removal but of termination. The Mask integrates itself fully into the host’s nervous system, overwriting volition and assuming total control of body and perception. The original consciousness is not merely suppressed, but effectively erased from outward existence, leaving behind a living puppet. From that point forward, the Mask directs the host with seamless competence, using them as both vehicle and disguise.
No evidence has ever been found of Mask culture, hierarchy, or society. There are no records of communication beyond the immediate act of takeover, no signs of political goals or willingness to coexist peacefully. They appear instead to be a singular, relentless phenomenon: a self-propagating method of occupation. They do not negotiate, trade, or build alliances. They simply arrive, attach, and expand.
