Trade Worms

The Trade Worms are colossal, sinuous beings whose lives unfold entirely within the cavernous hulls of their own starships, each vessel a home, trading post, and body-extension, their cradle and kingdom. A single worm inhabits each ship, attended by swarms of tireless robotic servitors that maintain every system from life support to communication arrays. These machines are not merely tools but extensions of the worm’s will, cybernetically linked into their entire nervous system. To encounter a Trade Worm is not to meet a traveler, but to dock with a sovereign entity whose territory begins at the edge of its hull and ends wherever its influence can reach.
Their society, if it can be called that, is less a community and more a simmering constellation of rivals. Each Trade Worm is intensely territorial and deeply suspicious of its peers, hoarding knowledge, routes, and contacts like precious ore. Cooperation is rare and fleeting, usually dissolving the moment advantage tilts. Power, to them, is measured purely in mercantile success: assets accumulated, deals struck, leverage secured. They will buy, sell, or trade nearly anything, from raw materials to secrets to favors, provided the transaction adheres to the legal frameworks of whatever species they are dealing with.
